From August 1-31, 2012 UBC's Rare Books and Special Collections will be holding an exhibit on Esoteric and Occult practices within BC. Learn the secrets of Rosicrucianism, Freemasonry, Theosophy. Discover the roots of spiritualism, Neopaganism and New Age practices. Curated by Karen Meijir-Kline from Universiteit van Amsterdam, a now-local expert on Mysticism and Western Esotericism.

Did you know Vancouver was home to a secret Rosicrucian temple? That Maitland Stephen, a prominent Marxist, was also the head of a Theosophical lodge downtown? Learn all about BC's witches, occultists, Freemasonic lodges and other curiosities. A vibrant exhibition of BC's thriving, secretive occult world.

If you would like to see the exhibition, located in the reading room, you can do so until August 31st, from Monday to Friday 10am – 4pm. The exhibition is free and open to all members of the public.

T-Shirt Art Design Contest Winner

This year we opened up the design for the convention t-shirt to YOU, our members and fans! First we asked those with an artistic bent to submit designs appropriate to this year's theme (Post Apocalyptic) and then we put up the top five and asked you all to vote for your top three.

Well the results are in, and we are proud to announce the winning design:

Invitation to the VCON Community Picnic!

You Are Invited to the VCON Community Picnic!

We're inviting all our attendees, volunteers and friends to join us for a free community picnic at Trout Lake, 10 minutes away from Commercial Skytrain Stn.

There'll be boardgames, frisbee, hotdogs (veggie option available!) and drinks. We're also going to do some volunteer training, talk about some great news about VCON, and we'll have cut-rate passes available. If you want to get involved helping plan things, or just hang out with some cool geeks, it's a great time to come out. Forecast says it should be sunny!

Come out and have fun! If you like, you can RSVP through our Facebook event or by email to i{click-to-expand}@vcon.ca or you can just show up on the day!

  • July 8th, Sunday
  • 4 PM to 8:00 PM
  • Gazebo in Trout Lake Park
    3300 Victoria Drive (@ E 15th Avenue)
    Vancouver, BC

 

DIRECTIONS:

Bus from BROADWAY/COMMERCIAL SKYTRAIN STN:

  • Cross Commercial Drive
  • Get on the #20 bus going south.
  • You'll pass "Victoria Diversion" - Stay on the bus.
  • Get off at "Victoria Drive"
    (If you reach E 22 AVE, you've gone too far)

The above is a about a 3 minute bus ride. If you don't want to take the bus you can also just walk it! The park is 2 km from the station - about a 14 minute walk.

  • Walk down Victoria until you reach Hull Street. (if you hit Stamisbury you've gone too far)
  • Turn left onto Hull Street and just walk toward the park.
  • Walk straight into the park. You'll see the beach very quickly.
  • Turn right, walk about 20 metres.

We'll be at the gazebo! There's only one so you can't miss us!

Driving from Commercial Drive @ East Broadway (BROADWAY/COMMERCIAL SKYTRAIN STN)

  • Depart Commercial Dr toward E 10th Ave, for 1.0 km
  • Road name changes to Victoria Division for 0.2 km
  • Turn left onto Victoria Dr for 0.1 km
  • Turn right onto E 19th Ave for 0.5 km
  • Turn left onto road for 0.1 km
  • Arrive at park. There'll be a parking lot for you here!
  • Go past the big tree in the north west corner of the parking lot.

We'll be at the gazebo! There's only one so you can't miss us!
